Fellowship Programme 2017


The Fellowship Programme of Azim Premji Foundation aims to give a hands on, enriching experience of the school education system to people coming from diverse domains and professions.

During this comprehensive 2-year programme, we will focus:

Year 1

  • Hands on Teaching at government schools in the Blocks of a district
  • Deep immersion in education to kindle, develop and build incumbent’s perspectives
  • Participation in the activities of the District Institute (DI) where you are placed and to understand the various roles in the DI.  

Year 2 activities will be spent in capacity building preparing for a suitable role that an incumbent might choose in the DI after the completion of the Fellowship Programme. 

During this 2 year period Foundation will provide opportunities to build an understanding in the area of education through teaching and capacity building through various roles in the DI. Every Fellowship participant be actively mentored and will benefit from hands-on experience of working in the field.

Fellowship candidates will be posted to rural districts of the 8 states that we work out of. Fellowship candidates are expected to be prepared to live and work in rural environments which provides an important exposure to challenging living conditions of that terrain. Fellows will be posted to interior districts of Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Telangana.


We welcome young and bright people from a variety of backgrounds with willingness to explore the social sector and a deep desire to contribute to the Education space.
Fellow candidates are eligible to apply if they have:
  • 3 to 10 years of work experience.
  • A post-graduate or a professional degree in any discipline.
  • Proficiency in local languages (Hindi or Kannada or Tamil or Telugu)

Programme FAQs

1. What will I do during the 2 years of fellowship?

  • During the first year, you would be introduced to the education sector and our work in the field locations. This will be enabled by the teaching experiences you undertake in government schools and through interaction with the local community.
  • In your second year, you gain specific exposure to identified area of your contribution.  This could be through active involvement in the activities and programmes in that area enabling you to develop understanding and deeper ability in that identified role.

2. What kinds of work areas are available during the Fellowship program?

The Fellows at the Field Institute would build their experience teaching in government schools, immersion in education to develop/ build their perspective along with participation in Field Institute activities to understand the various roles.

Some of the other areas that a Fellow can actively participate in at the Field Institute during the 2nd year could be as follows:
  • Research and Analytics in the subject.
  • Contribute in documentation, designing publications and establishing external connects.
  • Participate in developing modules in the subject 

3. Do I need to have any social sector experience to apply?
No, social sector experience is not mandatory. However, a deep interest or social conscience for any issues faced in today’s context will be an advantage. We are inviting people who have a passion for catalyzing social change

4. Where will I live and work?
Your location of work will be in one of the blocks of the District Institute and the same will be communicated to you closer to the date of your joining.

5. Since I will be working in rural India, do I need to know the local language?
Yes, it is very important to be able to read and write in the local language. For example if you are posted to Sirohi District Institute, you need to be able to read and write in Hindi 

6. What support will i receive during the programme?
Each Fellow will have mentors assigned to him / her during the Fellowship period. Fellows will receive continuous support from these mentors and from the Fellowship Team.

7. What opportunities will be available after I complete the programme?
There will be opportunities to work with Azim Premji Foundation after the successful completion of two year programme.

8. Will I receive a stipend?
Yes. A monthly stipend of Rs. 28,800- per month (all inclusive) will be offered.

On the successful completion of the programme, you may be offered employment opportunities in the Foundation, at an appropriate compensation package in line with the Foundation’s practice.

9. Will there be training before I start work in rural India?
Yes. Please read About the Programme for more details.

10. Where will the training take place?
The initial 2 weeks induction would be in Bengaluru. The subsequent sessions and the field posting would be in the District Institutes.

11. Will you provide accommodation during the training period?
Accommodation would be provided for the initial 2 weeks of induction at Bengaluru.

12. Can I leave the Fellowship in-between the 2 year program?
In case you wish to discontinue, you can leave the Fellowship program after completing the 1st year or after completing the 2nd year The Fellow can leave in-between also after serving the appropriate notice period.

13. Am I entitled for any leave during the Fellowship period?
Fellows are entitled to 12 days leave per year on a pro-rata basis, and this will accrue @ 1 day per month at the end of each month.

14. How many days do I need to work in a week?
District Institutes work Monday to Saturday, the timings and date also varies across locations.

15. Do fellows receive a certificate or acknowledgment after completing the Fellowship?
Yes, upon completing either 1 year or the full 2 years of Fellowship Programme successfully the Fellows would receive a certificate.

16. . When will the program commence?
Likely to commence in March 2017

17. How do I apply for the Fellowship Programme?
You are required to apply through the online application form only. The application form requires details of your academic background, relevant work experience and required personal details for processing.

Application and Selection Process FAQs

1.What are the minimum eligibility criteria to apply for the Fellowship Programme?
  • 3 to 10 years of work experience.
  • A post-graduate or a professional degree in any discipline.
  • Proficiency in local languages (Hindi or Kannada or Tamil or Telugu) 

2. What is the selection process like?

After submitting the online application, shortlisted candidates will go through an online test which will be a combination of multiple choice and descriptive questions. The test will have sections that examine candidates on social/general awareness, logical reasoning, analytical ability and reading comprehension. Candidates who pass the written test will go through two rounds of interviews and an offer will be made to selected candidates. 

3. What to expect in test and interview?

Stage 1: Online Assessment 

Online Assessment / Test will cover aspects of Socio-Economic Geographical Awareness, Reading Comprehension, Descriptive Writing and Analytical Ability. The test pattern consists of Multiple Choice and Descriptive Questions. The duration of the test is 120 minutes.

Candidates shortlisted for test will be informed by email, along with the Admit Card

The results of the Online Assessment / Test will also be announced by email.
Stage 2: Personal Interviews

Applicants who clear the Online Assessment will be invited through email for a Personal Interview.

Candidates should be prepared to make a presentation to the interview panel for about 10-15 minutes on a given topic as a part of the Personal Interview.
4. What are the necessary documents to be submitted with the application form?
Only CV is required.

5.  I had applied last year but did not make it, can I still apply?
You may reapply only after 18 months.
  • Last date of application submission extended to December 7, 2016.

  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for online test in any of the 4 locations- Bangalore, Delhi, Jaipur and Lucknow.

  • All applications will be screened. Applicants who qualify the written test will be invited for personal interviews to be held at multiple locations from December 19 to 23, 2016. Interview locations will be communicated at a later point of time

The Fellows are placed in various Field Institutes and functions and have been involved in:
  • Capacity building workshops, youth forums, Volunteer Teachers Forum (VTF), Kasturba Gandhi BalikaVidyalaya (KGBV)
  • Contributing in research surveys, Teacher Learning Material Co-dev, Documentation and Reports, Data analysis
  • Visiting and observing blocks, community, schools, teachers, head teachers, children under the ambit of NCF, RTE
  • Knowledge building through book review- analysis and summarization

The Fellows participate in an online course “Deepening Perspectives in Education” which comprises of modules such as ‘children and childhood’, ‘teachers and teaching’, ‘school’, ‘school systems’ and ‘community’.

The Fellows are involved in their 10 month project on various topics such as:
  • Technology Enabled Item Bank
  • Multilingualism in the light of Mother Tongue based approach and how it affects the student Achievement
  • Analysis of the post workshop follow up on Education and Leadership Management in the district of Tehri and Uttarkashi.
  • Activity based teaching for effective learning.
