Disability

Disability

We support organisations working across a range of disabilities such as physical, sensory, developmental and intellectual.

We also support organisations that work with people with avoidable disabilities such as clubfoot and avoidable blindness.

Currently, through our grants, we collaborate with more than 70 organisations that work with some of the most vulnerable people across age groups. Their work covers a wide range of interventions for need-based therapeutic interventions, education (special, and inclusive), employment and livelihood support, assisted living services for elderly with disabilities and persons with severe/profound disability and other allied concerns.

Rehabilitation and inclusion are two crucial aspects of our work in disability. We support intervention models via a community-based rehabilitation or a centre-based approach in urban and rural areas.

We also promote employment opportunities for people with visual impairment, access to recreation and sports for women with disability and prevention of disability for children.

Apart from addressing the issues and loopholes in the care, welfare and protection of people with disabilities, we also focus on developing an ecosystem that is both adept and empathetic towards their needs. This includes the capacity-building of caregivers, frontline functionaries, medical professionals and other organisations interested in widening/deepening their work on disabilities.

Our partners’ work under Disability have led to several changes and improvements. Chief among them is the timely identification of children with developmental delays and disabilities. This has resulted in reducing the severity of the disability, improved quality of life and increased inclusion in family and society.

Our partners have also worked on inclusive practices in the community, thus encouraging meaningful inclusion within the family, schools, places of work and society overall.

They have also enabled access to rights and entitlements such as Unique Disability Identity card or UDID, insurance, scholarships and pensions for persons with disability.

Our work under Disability also includes the equally significant area of mental health. We focus on collaborating with organisations that ensure the availability, accessibility and affordability of mental healthcare services to the most vulnerable populations. This includes interventions for community-based and community-led mental health services as well as institutional care for chronic mentally ill. At the moment, we are supporting such work through our grants to 17 organisations.

In the area of Disability, we work through our partners.
