Objectives: Understand the diversity of clothing and dyeing among different cultures. Appreciating different traditional arts and crafts

1. Album of clothes in India

Students should make a traditional cloth album for different states in India. The students can be made into five groups and each group can take six states.

The album can have the state mapped in the India map, list of and pictures/drawings of cloths, types of weaving techniques and traditional dyeing methods for the clothes worn in the state. In addition, they could include the need for a particular type of clothing in those states (based on climate, occupations, religion etc.). The teacher can help the students by providing videos and books showing different cloths.

Learning outcome: The students can understand the diversity of clothing and its variation based on the climate and availability of resources.

1. Exposure visit to an artist/craftsman

The students can be taken to a local handloom weaver, artist or craftsman. (Eg: Munnusamy in Kanuvapet, Villianur who makes terracotta statues, toys, showcase displays, etc.) The students will have to observe and interview them for understanding the history of the art, the present condition, how the transfer of knowledge happens, benefits of traditional art/craft and how to popularize it. Outcome - Profile of the artist or craftsmen. The students can also come up with a plan/suggestion on how the arts/craft can be revived and popularized.

1. Handicrafts in home: Survey the household for the use of traditional handicrafts, utensils and handloom cloths.

Outcome:-

1. Collate the whole class data and analyze how we have changed our lifestyle.
2. Students can interview the elders in their homes to understand why certain traditional materials are used/not used.
