Grade : 6, 7 & 8

Plants are true wonder of nature. They are a wonderful medium for children to experience the marvel and magnificence of nature.  Plants are almost everywhere; it establishes a direct connect between nature and the child’s life. The study of plants provides scope for a lot of hands on inquiry and can be made engaging and interesting with concrete experiences.

In addition to the understanding of plants, the theme of plants also provides opportunities for developing skills like observation, data collection, analysis, looking for patterns, drawing conclusions, communication etc. and values like caring for nature, sustainable use of resources towards a better future.

The current resources focus on the following,

The lessons ‘The living world of plants’ and ‘Plant Morphology’ in grades 6 & 7 respectively covers the structural adaptations of the plants to carryout various function in their habitat. This catalogue contains thought provoking inquiries to explore and explain these concepts.

1. Understanding structure and function:

Children are encouraged to observe, compare and analyse the structural differences in plant parts and understand the reasons behind them. This resource is a collection of plant images from three different habitats that are familiar to children. You will also find a structured inquiry sheet to record their observations, discuss their predictions on the adaptations and draw conclusions based on them.  Teachers can display these images and make children write their answers in the worksheets.

2. Deduce from clues:

A simple and interesting game on Plant adaptations with images and clues. The clues help elicit the student’s understanding step by step and provides opportunity to reinforce their understanding of adaptations and its purpose. There is a description of the plant for the teacher’s reference.

3. Card and clues:

This is exclusively to deal with the concept of modifications. 13 sets of cards with images and clues are available for learning, identifying and exploring the various stem and root modifications.

GRADE 8

Class 8 deals with the pictorial features of plant kingdom which covers the concepts of structure of fungi, flowering and non-flowering plants, structure of stem, leaves, roots etc. The resources available will make the concepts of plant structures interesting for children.

1. “Do we really know our tree neighbours?”

This PowerPoint presentation covers uncommon aspects of the trees and plants that are commonly seen around us making us wonder if we really know our tree neighbours. The links to the detailed readings and original source article is mentioned in the resource.

2. Let’s Try Grouping Plants:

This resource focuses on classifying the plants based on its morphology and structure. It has a worksheet with a table that needs to be filled after observing a plant. These observations should be used to analyse and group the plants into monocots and dicots. This activity initiates interests in classification as well as develops the observation and analysis skills in children. Further, it also allows children to explore the minute differences in morphology and structure from one plant to another.
