Matter

Matter
Is Air Matter?

This is an activity done to verify whether air has mass or not, and to prove that air is Matter. This activity is done by blowing two balloons and suspending them from the two ends of a ruler. A string is tied to the ruler exactly at its mid-point. The string is suspended from a fixed support. As the air from one balloon is released slowly, the ruler tilts indicating that the balloon with air is heavier than the balloon without air.

Separation of Colours

Black colour is a combination of Red, Blue and Yellow. This demonstration helps children to visualise this. Different coloured pigments are carried at different rates by water as it moves up the filter paper through capillary rise.

Separation of  Substances by centrifugation

The video shows how different ingredients in a mixture are separated in a   centrifuge based on the difference in densities.  Muddy water is separated into mud and water, calcium carbonate &water mixture is separated into calcium carbonate and water. https://youtu.be/KEXWd3_fM94

Molecular behaviour in Matter

How does molecules behave in a solid, liquid and gas. How does a substance change phase? This is a simulation where students can visualise the molecular behaviour. Students can add heat to a substance or remove heat and observe how the molecular behaviour changes

Adulteration in Food Items

In this resource, some simple tests which can be performed to check for adulteration of food items is provided. The tests are easy to do in a classroom with locally available food items
