Chemistry in Everyday Life: Soaps

Objective

To make the students learn about the cleaning effect of soap and evaluate the quality of different soaps.

Learning Outcomes

  1. The students will be able to understand the cleaning mechanism of soaps by exploring the concept of “like dissolving like”.
  2. The students will be able to differentiate between different types of soaps based on properties like lather formation and cleaning effect.

Demonstration 1: “Like dissolves Like” This demonstration will help the students to arrive at the conclusion that there are two types of substances:one that dissolves in water, and the other that does not dissolve in water but dissolves in oil. This understanding is crucial to understand the cleaning effect of soaps.

Activity 1: Soap-Making” In this activity, the students will learn how to prepare a soap. Conducting discussions pertaining to the activity will encourage the students to evaluate their behaviour while selecting a soap from the market.

Activity 2: “Analysing different soaps” In this activity, the students will learn about the properties of common soaps available in the market, such as lather formation and cleaning effect. During this process, they will learn about the cleaning effect of a soap and the difference between washing soaps and bathing soaps.
