Exploring the Laws of Reflection of Light

Duration: 90 minutes

Grade: VII, VIII

1. Objective

To make students learn the laws of reflection through simple activities with mirrors.

2. Learning outcomes

In course of transacting this module, the students will be able to:

  1. Arrive at the laws of reflection through exploration
  2. Apply the laws of reflection to locate the reflected ray
  3. Apply the laws of reflection to see objects when they are not in the line of sight

Activity 1—“Spot the Candle”: Through this activity, the students will be able to understand that light from the object should reach the eyes of the observer to make it visible and that light can only travel in straight lines.

Activity 2 — “Spot the Thumbtack”: This activity is designed for children to infer the laws of reflection while paying attention to the path taken by the light from the object to the mirror and then to the observer. A thumbtack is placed at two different positions in front of a mirror. The students should observe the reflection of the thumbtack from a fixed position.

Activity 3—“Catch the Laser Beam”: In this activity, the students shall apply the first law of reflection to locate a reflected ray. They should point a laser pointer in different directions and catch the reflected ray on a piece of paper.

Activity 4 —“See around the corner” : Here, the students shall apply the laws of reflection and use mirrors to see an object that is not in their line of sight. The students will be given a layout of the path, with two corners, made of cardboards.

The students have to adjust the mirrors to obtain the image at the point of observation. This activity can be used as an assessing the students’ understanding of the laws of reflection of light. A simple rubric has been provided in Annexure-3 to quickly assess the students’ understanding of the laws of reflection of light. The path of light that is given here is the path that the light takes in a periscope.
