Activities for English-language teaching

Highlight:

Application of the 5E method—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate—to teach poems and prose improves participation and engagement of the students in the classroom.

Background:

English is one of the subjects that students find difficult. Oftentimes, the students do not have enough previous exposure to the English language. Hence, it becomes an difficult task for the teachers as well. To get over this problem, I have tried to incorporate many activities while teaching to improve the language skills of my students.

Classroom interaction to develop vocabulary:

Students require the necessary input in English in order to improve their skills in the English language. So, I tried to introduce five new words to my students every day. I used to write them down on the blackboard. Initially, the students were confused, and they were not able to follow the words. However, there was a drastic change after a few days with the students starting to take the initiative to learn the words. This small exercise not only helped the students to improve their writing and reading skills, but it also enhanced their vocabulary.

Teaching poem and prose:

Follow the 5E (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate) method for teaching a poem with the support of various activities and ICTs.

Use engaging materials, such as masks, picture cards having text on them, etc., to make the students participate in the classroom activities.

Design the materials and use them in such a manner that it incorporates the needs of the students. The students should be encouraged to express/read/recite the poem or prose along with gestures and expressions.
