Bird Talk | Nina and the Baby Sparrows

Class 3: Unit 2: Bird Talk | Nina and the Baby Sparrows

Both the poem and the prose in unit 2 deal with ‘birds’. The poem ‘Bird Talk’ is a conversation between two birds about how human beings are different from them, while the prose ‘Nina and the Baby Sparrows’ is a story about Nina, a little girl, who is concerned about the baby sparrows in her house. One of the main themes of this unit is ‘differences in nature’. Students are to be made aware of the differences between humans, animals and birds. Also, they need to understand and appreciate the differences among themselves as well.

Bird Talk – lesson plan: (EN5126):-  the lesson plan includes an origami activity where students are given simple instructions in English to create a paper bird. Picture-based interactions, blackboard reading and textbook reading are part of this lesson plan.

‘I Can, We Can’ (EN5127) is an activity where a video-based discussion is done to bring out students’ thoughts on the differences in nature – between animals and humans as well as among humans. Students then share with the class their unique talents and the talents of the class as a whole gets listed on the board.

‘Who Can Fly Without Wings’ (EN5128A - EN5128C) is a simple story that can be used as supplementary reading for the unit. It familiarizes students with vocabulary such as ‘wings’, ‘fly’, ‘can’t’ etc. An activity has also been designed around the story; students, with the help of picture clues, fill up blanks to complete the story.

There’s a teacher guide and teacher and student versions of the story.

Nina and the Baby Sparrows – Teacher Guide: (EN5129) this module contains guidelines for the teacher to conduct ‘textbook pictures’-based interaction and a read-aloud activity.

Nina and the Baby Sparrows – Read Aloud (EN5130) this activity lets students to read a simplified version of the story. They also get to fill in the blanks based on picture clues.
