Houses & Habitats – Class 1 Unit 1

Both the poem (A Happy Child) and the prose (Three Little Pigs) are based on the theme of houses and habitats. Thematically-linked activities along with the transaction module for the lesson is detailed here.

Class 1 Unit 1 (Poem) – A Happy Child

Project Activity – Making a House [EN5101]

Students are asked to make a house out of maida, newspapers or cardboard boxes and display them in class.

Watch, Listen & Sing – A Happy Child [EN5102]

A video song of the poem is played for children to watch and later sing along.
Through this activity, students will gain a comprehension of the poem by engaging visually and audibly, and will also develop specific vocabulary relating to the poem.

Lesson Module – Ideas [EN5103]

A plan based on whole-language approach to teaching the lesson in class is included here. Through this approach, students will be able to make associations of pictures to words and improve their vocabulary. Conducting a Choreography of the Poem
Engaging students in a dance activity is fun especially at the early primary levels. Suggestions for conducting a choreography of the poem by involving all students is shared here.

Watch, Listen & Know [EN5104]

A video of the song – Old Mc Donald Had a farm is played and students watch it a couple of times and then sing along. This song (on farm animals) is thematically linked with one of the activity suggested in the textbook on animals and their habitats.

At the early years of school, students are generally interested in watching videos and this is a sure way of familiarizing them to the language being taught in class. So, a video of the lesson can be played to kindle the interest and attention of students and to help them get over any inhibitions of picking up a new language.

This way, they understand the story, names of characters and key vocabulary before the lesson is taught in class.

Narrating the story using Picture Cards [ENG003]

A series of pictures with simplified lines of the story is given. Teachers may use them to show-and-tell the story. Using simplified language will help students to pick up the language at ease.

Sequencing the Story [ENG005]

Scenes from the story are given to students as 8 pictures and they are asked to sequence them in the right order.
As students are already familiar to the story, this will be an interesting activity to test their comprehension.

Transaction Module & Role-Playing the Story [EN5105]

Detailed suggestions and tips on helping students to enact the story in the form of a drama is included here – students will develop speaking skills in an engaging manner through this activity.

Worksheet 1 [EN5106]

An activity on colouring a picture of the house and writing names of any 5 objects in it. Students are then encouraged to speak about the picture in their mother tongue.

Worksheet 2 [EN5107]

Pictures of different kinds of houses are given to students and teacher introduces their names to children. The picture along with their names are displayed in a chart.
Students are then encouraged to come forward and speak about their houses
