Towards a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society

Cleanliness and Hygiene - Class 1 Unit 2

The theme of personal hygiene and the objective of educating students on having to keep their classroom environment neat and tidy has been identified as learning outcomes in these chapters.

Class 1 Unit 2 (Poem) – After a Bath

Activity - Identifying Parts of the Body [EN5108]

Students are shown a blown-up picture of the boy given in the textbook and are asked to identify the different parts of the body.
This way, they are able to develop relating to the body.
After students have identified parts of the body, they are asked to speak in few lines about how they can keep themselves clean and healthy.

Watch, Listen and Know [EN5109]

Videos and other visuals are good mediums to educate children and to familiarize them with the target language. A video on the good and bad habits may be shown to inform them about cleanliness. Students also develop their listening skills through this activity.

Watch, Listen and Sing [EN5110]

This is a song version of the poem that is included in the textbook. Before teaching the lesson in class, students may be allowed to watch the poem and sing along with it or with the teacher.

Lesson Module - Transacting the Poem & Conducting a Choreography of the Poem [EN5111]

A lesson plan based on whole-language approach to teach the lesson in class is included here. Through this approach, students will be able to make associations of pictures to words and improve their vocabulary.
Engaging students in a dance activity is fun especially at the early primary levels. Suggestions for conducting a choreography of the poem by involving all students is shared here.

Class 1 Unit 2 (Prose) – The Bubble, the Straw and the Shoe

Activity Idea – Demonstration of which objects float/sink [EN5112]

This is an activity to show which objects sink or float in water – teacher can use heavy and light objects and describe in English as to why objects float or sink in water. After students have understood the concept, teacher points to common objects in the classroom and asks (in English) if they will float or sink.

Worksheet 1 - A simple Colouring Activity [EN5113]

In this worksheet containing pictures of different heavy and light things, students are given instructions in English to colour only those objects that are light in weight and are asked to write their names alongside the picture.

Activity Idea – Making Bubbles [EN5114]

Instructions to conduct a simple activity of making bubbles in the class for students to understand what ‘bubbles’ are, is described here.

Lesson Module – Transacting the Lesson [EN5115]

A lesson plan based on whole-language approach to teach the lesson in class is included here. Through this approach, students will be able to make associations of pictures to words and improve their vocabulary.
