Theme: Going to School - Class 2 Unit 1

Students at the class 1 level, have to feel comfortable in their learning environment and for this purpose, the NCERT textbook has included this theme of ‘Going to School’ in the first unit of Grade 2. This way, students are also able to relate to and contextualize what is being taught in class.

Class 2 Unit 1 (Poem) – First Day at School

Watch, Listen and Know

In this video, students watch a narration of Rani’s First Day at school. This video is thematically aligned with the unit and sets the context for the poem that is to be dealt in class.

Worksheet 1

In this worksheet, students are given a jumble of things and are asked to circle objects that they take to class. After they have circled, they may be encouraged to choose any 1 or 2 objects from the given pictures and speak in front of the class, describing in 1-2 sentences on how they use the object.

Ideas for Classroom Discussion

Ideas for the teacher to conduct a classroom discussion is shared here. They may ask students a series of questions related to their school and the activities they do there and develop the context for the unit.

In this video, students watch the song version of the poem and listen and sing along with it.

Transaction Module

Ideas for setting the context and introducing the theme is suggested here. This is a mandatory pre-lesson activity as it allows students to be able to relate to the lesson.

Teacher may play the first 3 minutes (only) and engage students in an interesting activity of singing a song related to the theme of ‘Going to School’.
