Little Tiger, Big Tiger

Grade 3: Unit 7

Prose: Little Tiger Big Tiger

Lesson Plan

Use a Hook:  Draw outline of tiger on the BB and ask them to draw it in their notebooks and write words related to a tiger within the outline. You can use ‘Wh’ questions to help. For example: Where does a tiger live, what does it eat, why are animals afraid of it, how does a tiger look, etc.?

Give them some long words from the text (like glistened or frightened) and ask them to make as many words as they can use those letters. Enact these long words or use them in a context and let children try to guess their meaning.

Make students guess the story: Ask children to identify words in the textbook for which they know the meaning. Write the words on the BB. Ask them to look at the pictures in the textbook. Based on the words and the pictures, ask them to guess the story. Ask probing questions (without giving away the story) to make them guess more. For eg. For the third picture in the textbook, T can ask: What is the tiger cub doing? Did he catch the frog? Did he have to go a long way to catch the frog? Where is the mother tiger?

Narrate the story: Narrate the story using code switching (mixing Tamil and English) with the help of the pictures in the original storybook (can be bought for Rs.40/- at https://www.sapnaonline.com/books/little-tiger-big-tiger-anil-vyas-8170110688-9788170110682?position=9&searchString=) or in the textbook.

Check Comprehension: Once children have heard the full story, show the picture on each page again and ask questions in English to check their understanding of the story. For eg.

Who are these?

Where do they live?

What does the mother tiger hunt?

What does the monkey do when it sees a tiger?

What do other animals do?

Elicit summary of the story: Elicit responses from students by asking questions and write a short/long/simple/complex summary on the board based on the reading level of your children. For eg.

Questions Summary of the story
Who lived in the jungle?  A mother tiger and a tiger cub lived in a jungle.
What did the mother tiger hunt?   The mother tiger hunted deer and pig.
How did the tiger cub play?  The tiger cub jumped on her tail again and again.
If the tiger cub went far away, what did the mother tiger do?  If the tiger cub went far away, the mother tiger called him back.
What happened one night? One night, the tiger cub saw a tiny frog.
What did he do?  The tiger cub chased the frog and caught it.
What did he see when he turned?   When he turned, he saw a big tiger.
Was he frightened? He was frightened.
What did the mother tiger do?  The mother tiger roared.
What did the big tiger do? The big tiger went away.

Reading: Read out the summary once and ask children to repeat. Then get children to come in pairs and read the summary on the BB. Write each sentence on a slip of paper and distribute it among the students. Now ask them to read their sentence and stand in a line in the right order. Then get each child to read his/her sentence and check if they are in the right order. This summary can be stuck on a chart and displayed in the class and used for future reading.

Discussion: Discuss with and elicit from children the theme of the story and its relevance to their lives. Some points for discussion:

Theme: The tiger is the master of the jungle

The little tiger will one day became a big tiger

Relevance: Who is the tiger in your house/school?

Do you like adults who frighten children or adults who love children?

When you grow up, what kind of an adult do you wish to be?

Song: Show children the video of the song. Linkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NFSHFLaeqN8

Lyrics:

La la la la la la la (2) Tiger

T.I.G.E.R Tiger (2)

T for Tiger

Its wild and hunter

It hunts everybody

When it is in hunger [2]

Let them enjoy it once. Ask them, if they could recognize any words. Write their responses on the BB. Ask them to pay attention to the lyrics and play the song again. Whatever words/phrases they are able to identify, write them on the left side of the BB.  Now using these words write the poem in the center of the BB with blanks for words they have not been able to identify. Play the song again and ask children to see if they can now fill in the blanks and complete the song. Help children guess the meaning of the song. Sing it line by line while reading it from the BB and let them repeat until they learn the song. Let them sing along with the video.

Writing: Let children go back to the outline of the tiger they had drawn. Ask them to write a few sentences about the tiger.

Reading Assessment: To check whether children are able to read with comprehension, give each child a worksheet and ask them to match the pictures with the text.

                      Match the columns
The tiger cub chased the frog
The tiger cub jumped on mother tiger’s tail.
Mother tiger and tiger cub lived in a jungle.
The tiger cub saw a big tiger
The mother tiger hunted deer and pig.
