Growing as a Teacher

‘The true teachers are those who help us think for ourselves.’ – S. Radhakrishnan

‘To be a teacher, you first need to learn every day.’

I love these principles and strive to follow them.

A primary school teacher

Primary school teachers teach young children between the ages of 4 and 11. They ensure that children have good numeracy and literacy skills before they enter secondary school. They plan lessons and assess students’ work based on the standards set in the curriculum. Communication skills are essential for this role.

Teacher – a learner

Most of my learning on how to teach happens in school. Each child learns differently. Therefore, I need to adopt different strategies to facilitate learning for all.

Role of a teacher

A teacher is not one who merely teaches the subject. She is also a good friend of the students. She takes multiple roles – a coach, a referee, a nurse etc.

Why I love being a teacher

I love to hear the laughter of my students as they work together on an assignment. The sweetest sound is when a student says, ‘Miss I understand! This is easy! I love Math’. I also feel blessed when I see my students stand up for one another when someone needs a friend.

Each day on my way to work, I think about my testimony. I pray to God to help me get through the day. God responds to me that I should be the answer to my students’ prayers; He tells me to love them, smile at them and listen to them. When I hear this, I know I am blessed and I feel grateful to be a teacher.
