Towards a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society

Growing as a teacher

An acrostic poem about teachers

Teaching – continuous learning

Encourages children

Achievements of their kids, make them happy

Committed to the fulfilment of their role

Helping their children to shine like stars

Ensuring the success of their children at every moment

Refresher of the changing society

Supporting children to face their challenges

This poem is dedicated to all my teachers who are the reason for my success and to all my teachers who are supporting me to develop myself. Happy Teachers’ Day!

As I said earlier, teaching is continuous learning; a teacher is always learning and growing. We as teachers are on an endless journey where we are always looking for new ideas, ways to improve our skills or new information that will help our students succeed both in curricular and extracurricular activities. When I was a student, I was not allowed to participate in extracurricular activities though I wished to. So today, whenever I get a chance to learn or to participate in such activities, I make full use of it. Thus I am growing as a teacher both for my own sake and also to engage my students in those activities.

Nowadays students are expecting more from teachers; they want their teachers to be all-rounders.

Primary teacher – as a teacher

                                 as an artist

                                 as a musician

                                 as a dancer

                                 as a craftsman

                                 as a mother

                                 and so on.

Yes, I have experienced this in my class.

I had learnt a few art and craft skills in the “Integrating Art and Craft Skills in School Education” workshop that I attended last year and also from the internet. I started teaching those skills to my students along with the regular teaching for 6 months. One day, one of my students came and told me, “Miss, unghalukulla ivalo thirama irukaa?” Though, I was well versed in my teaching and did all kinds of stunts to make them comfortable in learning, it was only then that I was recognised by my students. At the end of six months, we organised an Art and Craft Exhibition. From then, I started growing as a teacher for the sake of each of my students.

My childhood ambition was to become a teacher and build a house in town. My ambition has come true. Yes, though I have not built a house, I have built a place in each and every student’s heart. I am very much proud to be a teacher.
