Towards a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society

Merry Go Round

Can you spot?

Initiate a discussion on a village fair. Then tell children that you are going to give them a picture of a village fair.  Ask them to spot the following in the picture. [As you say them, write them on the board as well.]

  1. A bird
  2. A dustbin
  3. A chair
  4. A big balloon
  5. A drum

If children don’t know the meanings of these words, give clues in Tamil. For eg.

  1. It is living and can fly.
  2. You put waste in it.
  3. You sit on it.
  4. It is an object and can fly.
  5. It is used to play music during weddings.

Once children have understood the words, give every child a copy of the picture. After they have all identified the required objects, you can give them another list.

  1. Candy floss
  2. A mobile phone
  3. A policeman
  4. A lady with a gun
  5. An old man with a stick
  6. ……….

Again, if children can’t understand these words/phrases, give clues in Tamil or through actions. Let children find the objects in their picture. You can add more words to the list. You can add action words as well (e.g. A man eating ice-cream).

Sample picture of a village fair:

You can use the colour picture of a village fair for picture description (i.e. ask questions, write down children’s responses on the BB in English, and then ask them to come in pairs to read from the BB).

Preparing a Collage

  1. Ask children to name the things which they liked the most at a fair that they have visited. Write it down on the BB and get the children to read it.
  2. Get each child to draw and colour that which he/she liked, on a piece of paper. The above two images can give some ideas for drawing.
  3. Help each child write a few words about what he/she has drawn, at the bottom of the drawing.
  4. Form groups and get children to stick their drawings on a chart paper to form a collage.
  5. Finally ask all the groups to present their work to the class and let each child talk about his/her drawing.
