Multiplication in Fish Tale

Chapter 2: Fish Tale

The chapter deals with multiple concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Chapter activities is designed in a way to address the challenges students face in multiplication alone. Activities are designed for slow learners, other activities designed for higher order thinking (word problem, data formulation)

Objective of the lesson;

  1. To help student understand equal groups and able to comprehend word problems
  2. To solve higher order multiplication – multiplication comparison and word problem

Activity 1: Game - Move in groups (MA5137)

Choose a leader. Move in a circle while the leader claps her hands. The leader stops clapping and calls out a number. Make groups of the number she/he calls out

Objective – To introduce the idea of grouping to the children  which is pre-requisite to Multiplication.

Activity 2: Pictorial Representation to Abstract / skip counting  (MA5138)

The rabbit jumps 3 steps at a time. Find out where will the rabbit step when it runs ahead. Similarly it should be tried  out with other numbers.

Activity 3: Known to Unknown (MA5140)

Resources: Any Concrete Objects like Pebbles, Bangles, chips etc., Ask to form a group as below picture. This Picture clearly depicts the concrete to abstract.

Objective - To help them understand multiplication is a shortcut to adding groups of numbers together. This method helps students understand why they’re multiplying and how it works.

To introduce the core idea to the children that is “Multiplication means add the same number so many times”.

Activity 4: Integrating Dot and Math / Introduction of tables (MA5139)

Make the tables of 4, 5, 6,7,8,9 and 10 with dots on the notebook. Objective is to understand the progression and units in table.

Activity 5: : Integrating real life situation with Mathematics  (MA5141)

Show the Picture to students and ask to find at least four multiplication facts.

Objective – to describe the multiplication facts in numbers and words.  e.g., as follows

Name.of object    Multiplication fact/expression    Write in words    Total

Pineapples on the left    3X4=12    3 group of 4 pineapples each    12 pineapples in all

Activity 6 Multiplication Reference Chart (MA5142)

Fill each square on the chart by multiplying the row number and the column number.  On the multiplication chart shade all the even numbers with one color and the odd numbers with a different color. Fill up the multiplication chart as quickly as you can.

Objective – to understand the factors of each multiplied number, repetitive addition.

Activity 7 MultiplicationRace (game) (MA5143)

Multiply the given number in the flashcard and the answer will be searched in the other cards.

Objective - Learn the multiplication tables. Practice recalling the tables quickly.
