Patterns

Lesson concept – Introducing Patterns

Bridging

  • Patterns using real life objects.
  • Patterns using Shapes.

Learning objectives

  1. Recognise the sequence of the given pattern.
  2. Identifies and selects the next sequence of the given pattern.
  3. Completes the sequence of the pattern

Day 1: Patterns using real life objects.

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Recognise the sequence of the given pattern.
  2. Identifies and selects the next sequence of the given pattern.

Warmup activity: Clapping and Slapping (3 - 5 min)

To make the students comfortable with a new topic a warmup activity based on pattern is given. This activity comes by 2 – 2 pattern or 1 – 1 pattern. i.e., 2 clapping hands and 2 slapping legs.

  • The Students are asked to count the number from 1 to 4 (for 2 – 2 pattern) where students will slap their legs for count 1 and 2 and then clap the hands for the count 3 and 4.
  • For 1 – 1 pattern. The Students are asked to count the number 1 and 2 for count 1 they will slap their legs and for count 2 they will clap the hands for the count 3 and 4.

Activity 1: Recognising Patterns (10 min).

This is a discussion activity to know how the students understand the patterns in their view.

Instruction.

Step 1: The students are shown pictures/objects which has a pattern on it.

Step 2: Students are asked to see it for few minutes.

Step 3: Then discussion starts with question - “How they see the pic?”

Step 4: The Discussion continues based on the responses.

Some example of Discussion Points:

  1. What do u think about this picture? What is different/special in it?
  2. How many objects are there and why are they repeating?
  3. Tell me what comes after this object?

Activity 2: Patterns using Objects – Real life objects (10 min)

The purpose of this activity is to introduce the initial stage of the ABAB pattern and moving to AABB,AABAAB and so on.

Instructions:

Step 1: The students are made into even groups of 2 or 4 based on the strength of the class.

Step 2: Each group are divided into half and one group is asked to collects stones  and another group is             asked to collect Leaf or sticks so on and then gathers them collectively in the group.

Step 3: Teacher must provide one form of pattern to each group and asked to write/draw/say what will be the following sequence.

Step 4: Based on the response the discussion happens on how they recognize the pattern.

Note: The real – life material is optional based on the classroom.

Day 2: Double Digit

Lesson Objectives:

  1. Identifies and selects the next sequence of the given pattern.
  2. Completes the sequence of the pattern.

Activity 1: Concrete Object Activity – Using shapes (10 min)

Step 1: Students are made in groups of two.

Step 2: The shapes are given to each group, note that each group are given different combination of shapes.

Step 3: Here the students are expected to create their own pattern based on the shapes given.

Step 4: A few minutes of discussion based on their created pattern.
