Towards a just, equitable, humane and sustainable society

Flowers of Puducherry

The students of Class 3 are introduced to the theme of plants with the chapter titled ‘Plants Around Us’. Then, they go on to see the diversity of those plants with the chapter ‘Leaves in our Lives’ and lessons such as ‘The Plant fairy’ and ‘A Beautiful cloth’. In Class 4, the students learn about flowers and flower sellers in the lesson ‘Valley of Flowers’, and they discuss about who trees belong to in ‘The Story of Amrita’ and ‘Abdul in the Garden’. the students move on to the lesson about plants that have come from far off places in the lesson ‘Seeds and Seeds’ and ‘Forests and Forest People’. Students finally get the notion of parks and sanctuaries in Class 5 in the lesson ‘Whose Forests?’.

Now, let us take up the lesson ‘The Valley of Flowers’, where the aim is to introduce the students to an interesting place—a valley that has diverse flowers—and then discuss the various aspects of flowers, such as their appearances, the plants types in which they grow, and the uses of flowers. However, there is a need of constant support in order to bridge the content gaps, present in the textbook, and the literacy gaps that the students have. This project aims at bridging those gaps by providing students with the opportunity to explore nearby places and by providing reading and writing support through stories and profiling.
